West Park Hospital | 2014 Progress Report - page 1

O
n behalf of the staff, physi-
cians, trustees and other
members of the West Park
Hospital family, we are pleased to
share some of the exciting changes
that occurred at WPH in 2013.
2013 was a year full of change
both on the national and local lev-
els. The implementation of the
Affordable Care Act was the most
significant change the health care
industry has experienced in many
years.
West Park Hospital has worked
closely with several state enti-
ties to bring resources to Cody
to assist in educating consumers
and businesses on the mandat-
ed Affordable Care Act require-
ments and will continue to serve
as a resource to assist people with
questions.
West Park Hospital complet-
ed our first full year in the new
addition that was completed in
June 2012. The new Emergency
Department, Laboratory, Imag-
ing and Patient Financial Services
Department have all been excel-
lent additions for our staff and
patients. We have received posi-
tive feedback from our patients
that have received services in
these new areas.
WPH experienced an increase
in patient volumes in all of the
new clinical areas in 2013.
We now are excited to be mov-
ing forward with the final phase
– “Bridge to the Future” – of
our facility master plan which
involves relocating the medical/
surgical/ICU beds to the second
floor of the new addition, relocat-
ing our food services department
to the lower level of the new addi-
tion, relocating Cedar Mountain
Center to the vacant space on the
third floor of the hospital, and
then adding additional parking
across the street from the front
entrance of the hospital.
The projected start date of the
“Bridge to the Future” project is
May 2014. The project is project-
ed to take 16 months to complete.
Layton/Cowan Construction has
been selected as General Contrac-
tor.
WPH continued to experience
substantial growth in many areas
in 2013. WPH has recruited more
than 15 new physicians who have
joined our active medical staff in
the past two years, with the major-
ity of them starting in 2013. Our
active medical staff has grown to
more than 55 physicians on staff.
It’s rare to see such an outstand-
ing, well-trained medical staff in a
community the size of Cody repre-
senting more than 24 specialties.
Many of the physicians on the
WPH medical staff provide out-
reach services/clinics in other Big
Horn Basin communities.
WPH has two new physicians
who will be joining the medical
staff in 2014. Randy Folker, M.D.,
ENT will begin seeing patients in
the WPH ENT office in the Cath-
cart Health Center in April 2014.
Dr. Folker will provide Ear-Nose-
Throat and Allergy services to
patients.
Tyler Weaver, M.D. will begin
working as a hospitalist at WPH
in July 2014. WPH has expanded
its hospitalist service program so
two hospitalists are working seven
days per week caring for our inpa-
tients and LTCC residents.
WPH is actively recruiting
a neurosurgeon or fellowship
trained spine surgeon and also a
dermatologist to join the active
medical staff in 2014.
WPH partnered with several
different entities in 2013 to bring
new or expanded services to Cody.
WPH partnered with St. Vincent
Healthcare of Billings to remodel
the upper level of the Big Horn
Basin Cancer Center and install
a state-of-the-art linear accelera-
tor. The project was made possible
through a $5 million grant from
the Helmsley Charitable Trust.
WPH partnered with Dialysis
Clinic Inc. (DCI), to expand our
dialysis services and move into
new space in the Cathcart Health
Center.
WPH also partnered with Eagle
Med to bring a fixed-base rotor
wing medical flight service to
Cody.
The Eagle Med helicopter is
based at Yellowstone Regional
Airport and is staffed with full-
time pilots, flight paramedics
and nurses, and provides medical
flight services throughout the Big
Horn Basin. The response time
for a medical helicopter has been
reduced from about 45 minutes to
approximately 10 minutes.
WPH completed our first com-
munity needs assessment in
2013 by partnering with many
community leaders and stake-
holders from throughout Park
County. The number one commu-
nity health need identified by the
stakeholders involved in this pro-
cess was Suicide Prevention and
Education. WPH was willing to
take the lead on this initiative to
provide two hours of training and
education to every WPH employ-
ee.
We are pleased to see many
other organizations and busi-
nesses in Park County commit
to provide this training to their
employees in an effort to reduce
our current suicide incidence rate
and reach out to individuals who
need assistance.
WPH continues to work dili-
gently on strengthening and
improving our Electronic Medi-
cal Records with the implementa-
tion of the Computerized Provider
Order Management system. Fed-
eral requirements are mandating
that hospitals and physician offic-
es nationwide make these changes
to their information systems or
face financial penalties.
The WPH medical staff and
other staffers maintain aware-
ness of the often-changing federal
regulations as they expend a large
effort to meet both the require-
ments and deadlines.
WPH had three new board
members begin their first term
on the WPH board in 2013. Lenox
Baker, M.D., Ty Nelson and Dave
Burke all began as new trustees in
2013.
WPH lost many great employ-
ees in 2013 due to retirement
or other factors, but also gained
many great new employees during
the same time. WPH has grown to
more than 600 employees.
Our greatest asset continues

W
ith two major construc-
tion projects behind them,
West Park Hospital trust-
ees adopted an updated Facil-
ity Master Plan (FMP) in 2013 to
begin Phase III.
The latest phase of construction
of the facility master plan called
“Bridge to the Future” is sched-
uled to begin in May and be com-
pleted in 2015.
“WPH remains committed to
upgrading our facilities and servic-
es as needed in accordance to our
facility master plan and continu-
ous growth we have experienced,”
CEO Doug McMillan says. “We feel
very fortunate that we have been
able to update and expand areas of
our hospital that are 40 years old
to better meet our patients and
staff needs. Our environment we
work and provide care in is much
different than it was 40 years ago
and our volumes have increased
substantially.”
“It’s a continuous process and
we are all proud of this hospital
and the nice facilities we have to
care for our patients and for our
staff and physicians to work,” he
adds. “People are very impressed
when they see our organization.”
Health information manage-
ment, medical staff services, the
WPH Foundation/Patient Experi-
ence Department will move into
the old imaging space, McMil-
lan says. Internet technology will
move to the area currently occu-
pied by health information man-
agement.
Br i dge to the Future a l so
includes a 29-bed medical-surgical
intensive care unit. A second floor
bridge or connecting corridor will
be built to connect the older por-
tion of the hospital to the new
addition allowing staff, patients
and visitors to easily walk from
the current second floor of hospi-
tal to second floor of new addition.
The bridge will serve as an excel-
lent connection on the upper level
allowing easy access from the Mon-
ument side of hospital to new addi-
tion.
“The cafeteria, kitchen and din-
ing room will move into the lower
space,” McMillan says. “In-patient
beds on the second and third floors
will move to the second floor of the
new addition.”
The plan includes renovating
the existing third floor, he says,
and relocating the Cedar Moun-
tain Substance Treatment Center.
The current Cedar Mountain Cen-
ter log building (at the corner of
Sheridan Avenue and Stock Drive)
will be removed and replaced with
additional parking for patients and
visitors.
The project is projected to take
16 months to complete.
